Football Association of Ireland Passes Motion Calling for European Football Ban on Israeli Teams
The Football Association of Ireland has voted in favor to present a official proposal to Uefa, calling for the banning of Israel from all European club and international competitions.
Basis of the Proposed Suspension
The resolution, which was proposed by Irish side Bohemians, highlighted claimed violations by the IFA of two important European football regulations.
- Inability to implement and enforce an proper anti-racism policy.
- Establishment of clubs in disputed territories lacking the consent of the Palestrian FA.
Vote Outcome and Future Actions
According to an official statement from the FAI, the resolution was backed by 74 votes, with 7 opposed and two not voting.
The association plans to officially present this motion to the Uefa executive committee, seeking the immediate suspension of the IFA from European tournaments.
In an extraordinary general meeting of the Football Association of Ireland, an ordinary resolution was posed to delegates. It passed by a majority.
Earlier Uefa Considerations
The European body had previously put on hold intentions to ban Israeli football at the end of September, following the announcement of a US peace proposal for the region.
While they never publicly stated contemplating an extraordinary meeting on the issue, plans were understood to be well developed.
International Context
The FAI move follows similar demands in last autumn from the heads of both Turkey and Norway's football associations for banning Israel from international competition.
These appeals were issued after UN specialists urged world and European football bodies to suspend the Israeli FA, referencing a UN investigation that accused Israel of acts of genocide during the war in Gaza.
Israel has denied these allegations and labeled the report as outrageous.
Possible Ramifications
Should Uefa decide to suspend the IFA, it would likely create tension with the United States government โ co-hosts for the upcoming World Cup โ which strongly opposes such an action.
Although Uefa has the power to suspend Israeli teams from its tournaments, it might not be able to stop them from taking part in World Cup qualifiers, which is governed by Fifa.
